Ingredients
  • 1 sheet puff pastry (defrosted)
  • 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/8 teaspoon allspice
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 3 whole apples (cored, peeled, thinly sliced)
  • 1 whole orange (juiced)
  • 2 tablespoons vegan butter (melted)
  • 2 tablespoons sugar (for sprinkling on the top)
Instructions
  1. 1

Defrost the puff pastry according to package directions. (It takes approximately 30 minutes to defrost one sheet)

  2. 2

Peel and core the apples. Cut them into thin slices, then cut each slice into thirds.

  3. 3

Combine the sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, and salt in a large bowl.

Toss the apples with the orange juice, then add them to the dry mixture.

Toss until the apples are well coated, then set them aside.

  4. 4

Unfold the puff pastry and roll it onto a lightly floured surface to approximately 11 x 15 inches. Using a pairing knife, score the pastry very lightly, lengthwise, into three even columns.

Spoon the apples into the middle column.

  5. 5

Cut even slits on each outer column – as many as you like. The more you have, the longer it will take to wrap the strudel, but the prettier it will be—say 10 to 12 slits.

  6. 6

Start wrapping the center by pulling alternating slits of pastry from either side, pressing the ends into the pastry on the opposite side, making sure not to leave gaping holes on the top. Finally, fold the center section of the pastry over at the ends to create a seal.

  7. 7

Use a pastry brush to brush the top of the strudel with the melted butter, then sprinkle with sugar.

  8. 8
Baked strudel on a cutting board with fresh apples next to it.

Bake for 30 - 35 minutes until the top is golden and puffy. Allow the strudel to cool for 10 to 15 minutes before slicing.
