Description

A great pizza starts with a great sauce, and this Homemade Pizza Sauce is full of fresh, classic Italian-inspired flavor. Garlic and onion are sautéed in olive oil before crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, and tomato paste are added to create a rich tomato base. Oregano, basil, and parsley add aromatic flavor, while a pinch of red pepper flakes brings just a subtle touch of heat.

Slowly simmering the sauce allows it to reduce and develop a thick, spreadable consistency that’s perfect for pizza dough, flatbreads, and individual pizzas. Simple ingredients and a little time on the stovetop are all it takes to create a homemade pizza sauce that’s ready for whatever toppings you’re craving.

Ingredients
  • 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
  • 2 large cloves of garlic (crushed or minced)
  • 1 medium white or yellow onion (finely chopped)
  • 30 ounces crushed tomatoes
  • 15 ounces tomato sauce
  • 1/4 cup tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1 teaspoon dried parsley
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flake
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
Instructions
  1. 1

Set a large, heavy-bottomed stock pot over medium-high heat and add the olive oil.

  2. 2

Stir in the chopped onion. Cook for 3-4 minutes, then add the garlic. Cook, stirring, for another minute.

  3. 3

Add the crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, and tomato paste and stir to combine.

  4. 4

Stir in the sugar, oregano, basil, parsley, red pepper flakes, salt, and pepper, and bring the sauce to a boil, stirring continuously.

  5. 5

Reduce the heat to low and simmer gently, stirring occasionally, for 30 to 40 minutes or until the sauce has reduced and thickened.

  6. 6
A jar of homemade pizza sauce on a white cutting board with vine tomatoes, garlic, salt, and peppercorns.

Remove from the heat and cool slightly before using to make your pizza.  This sauce is also great for dipping breadsticks!

Refrigerate any unused portion and enjoy within 7 to 10 days.
