Can Dogs Be Vegan? What You Need to Know Before Switching

As more people embrace plant-based living, a common question comes up—can dogs be vegan too? Here’s what to consider before switching your dog to a plant-based diet.

While dogs are omnivores and can adapt to a plant-based diet, their nutritional needs are very specific, and getting it right matters.

Unlike their ancestors, the wolves, dogs today are omnivorous, consuming a diet of both plants and animals. Over time, dogs have adapted to living with humans and, like humans, may be capable of adjusting to a plant-based diet with proper nutritional planning.

As with humans, the challenge in adapting your dog to a vegan diet is ensuring it is well-balanced, which may require supplementation.

While commercial vegan dog-food diets are available for your pup, and some dogs may do well, we believe your best option before deciding whether to switch your dog to an all-plant-based diet is to talk with your veterinarian. With proper nutritional planning under the guidance of your veterinarian, your dog might also do very well. If your veterinarian doesn’t have nutrition-specific training, we suggest asking them for a referral to a veterinary nutritionist.

Our choices matter, but so does meeting our dogs where they are.

If you’re considering a plant-based path for your pet, the goal isn’t perfection—it’s thoughtful, balanced, and informed care that supports their health and happiness for years to come.
